Babette Josephs, D-Phila., is applauding the Pennsylvania Department of State for making voting information available to the public and educating eligible voters about their right to vote including former prison inmates. In a report released by the American Civil Liberties Union today, the group found that many states are wrongly purging felons from their voting rolls, but Pennsylvania is not part of this nationwide problem. Josephs commended the ACLU for publishing the report. Because of the arbitrary and flawed manner in which many states are purging their voting rolls, thousands and perhaps millions of people will not be able to cast their ballot on November 2nd," Josephs said, based on the report. "They mistakenly are removing registered voters, which include former prison inmates who have had their voting rights restored after paying their debt to society. "It's great to know that Pennsylvania is working to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast his or her vote," she said. Josephs said that in Pennsylvania, the only convicted felons who are not permitted to vote are those in prison. Pennsylvania does not purge felons from its voter rolls. Once a convicted felon is released from jail, he or she becomes an eligible voter and may vote in elections. "I'd like to remind everyone who is registered to vote, including felons not currently incarcerated, to vote on November 2nd. It's your right and your responsibility," Josephs said.
