PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 16 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., today urged parents and guardians to take their children to one of two locations in Philadelphia for a free vision check-up on "Give Kids Sight Day" on Nov. 21.
Children found to need vision correction will be provided with free prescription glasses.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wills Eye Institute at 9th and Walnut streets in Center City and the Eye Institute at 12th Street and Godfrey Avenue in Oak Lane.
The event is sponsored by the Public Citizens for Children and Youth and the Philadelphia Eagles Youth Partnership.
"It makes it harder for children to learn if their vision interferes with their ability to read and follow what is going on in the classroom," Josephs said. "A child may not realize he or she has a problem that can be remedied, and parents may not notice the child squinting or having other problems. I've been wearing glasses or lenses since I was in the second grade; I understand really well what it means when you can't see well enough to learn to read."
The free "Give Kids Sight Day" exams can verify if a child's eyes are sharp or if he or she needs glasses, and will even provide corrective glasses free of charge.
Josephs emphasized that no appointment is necessary for the exams and no insurance is needed, even if the child gets glasses.
Participating children will have a chance to win tickets to a Philadelphia Eagles football game.
