Josephs urges Halloween safety

HARRISBURG, Oct. 22 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., is cautioning Philadelphians to be safe and maintain common sense as they prepare for and celebrate Halloween.

"With trick-or-treat approaching, there are a number of points that families should keep in mind to play it safe this Halloween and ensure that people of all ages have a happy holiday," Josephs said.

Josephs offered the following safety reminders:

· Parents should accompany children on their trick-or-treat rounds. If a parent isn't available, someone the parents trust should go with the children.

Trick or treat only during times established by the city, and visit only homes that have the porch light on.

Children should walk on the sidewalk, not the road, when possible. They should walk facing oncoming traffic, and cross streets only at crosswalks, not between cars.

Children should avoid wearing masks that obstruct their vision. Costumes should be flame-retardant and fit properly.

Children should wear reflective clothing or patches on their costumes. Carrying a flashlight is a good idea.

Parents should check treats before they are eaten.

Parents should report any suspicious activity to local police.

Don't let small children carve pumpkins. Use specially designed pumpkin carvers -- no kitchen knives should be used.

Avoid candles in pumpkins if you can; glow sticks work wonderfully. If you wish to use candles, votives are safer.

Keep jack-o-lanterns away from anything that can catch fire.

Keep the family pets in a separate room; they can get just as scared as some of the children.

"I wish you and your family a safe and happy Halloween," Josephs said.
