Josephs' office to offer free tax help April 6

PHILADELPHIA, March 24 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., will offer free tax assistance to constituents earning less than $45,000 a year in her office on Monday, April 6.

Representatives from PathWays PA and the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will be available to help her constituents file their federal income taxes. Appointments are required for this free service.

"It's a great opportunity for taxpayers who are having a hard time filing their tax returns. All they have to do is schedule an appointment with my office and bring in the necessary information. The tax preparers will do the rest, and it comes at no charge to the filer," Josephs said. "Furthermore, people may walk out with a bigger return than they thought they were originally eligible for."

Josephs said this program also aims to make people aware of their eligibility for tax credits. One of these credits, for example, is the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is given to people who earn less than $40,000 a year. A 2008 tax filer with two qualifying children may be eligible for a tax return of up to $4,824 through this credit alone.

The volunteer tax preparers will file the completed tax returns directly with the IRS.

To set up an appointment, please call Josephs' office at 215-893-1515. All appointments will occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. April 6 in her office, 1528 Walnut St., Suite 501, and will last approximately a half-hour.
