Give kids a smile, book a free dentist appointment on Feb. 5
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 29 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., is encouraging parents to sign up their children for free dental care on Feb. 5, the fifth annual Give Kids a Smile Day.
"It's really very simple," Josephs said. "Just call and schedule your child's free dentist appointment for February 5th. Most children already have the day off, so they won't miss any school."
Under the program, any Philadelphia child is eligible to receive free dental care from volunteer dentists across the city. Dental care can include sceenings, sealants, cleanings, fillings and more intensive care.
Parents should call the Public Citizens for Children and Youth at 215-563-5848, Ext. 23 to schedule their child's appointment.
"Tooth decay is a common disease for children, and if left untreated, can lead to more serious medical issues. In fact, "Josephs concluded, "you cannot be healthy and have an unhealthy mouth. So why not take advantage of this free event?"
According to the American Dental Association, children should see a dentist no later than their first birthday, however studies reveal that only three out of five children have done so by the time they enter kindergarten.
Give Kids A Smile is an annual centerpiece to National Children's Dental Health Month in February.
