PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 22 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., today called on U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter to do his part to see that the U.S. Senate confirms Eric Holder as U.S. attorney general.
On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee delayed a vote on sending Holder's nomination to the full Senate after Republican committee members requested a one-week delay. Specter is the lead Republican on the committee.
"Delaying Holder's confirmation as attorney general is an obstruction of justice," Josephs said. "Specter should stop leading the Republican effort to block his confirmation. One would think that Pennsylvania's senior U.S. senator would be more interested in correcting the damage of the last eight years than in protecting Bush administration officials who may have broken the law.
"This petty partisan politicking violates the spirit of cooperation that our new president said is absolutely necessary as the country faces so many difficulties. Even Senator John McCain, who understandably has a right to be bitter, has recognized the necessity of working together and picked up the bipartisan mantle.
"Our Justice Department has been one of the most corrupt in decades and every day Holder's nomination is held up is another delay in restoring the public trust," she said. "We must have a vigorous Department of Justice that enforces our laws, including our civil rights and voting rights. Let Holder's confirmation continue without delay."
