HARRISBURG, April 1 -- The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has designated April 2 as "Kick Butts" Day in the Commonwealth with the unanimous adoption of a resolution sponsored by Rep. Babette Josephs.
The resolution (H.R. 676) pays tribute to the youth who stand up and speak out against smoking and tobacco use in an effort to keep children from becoming smokers and halt the millions of smoking-related deaths worldwide.
"Our youth are becoming more and more involved in what the world will become, from protecting the environment to volunteerism and civic involvement," said Josephs, D-Phila. "Their empowerment is also an essential part in reducing the hold Big Tobacco has on our society, so we should do what we can to bring awareness to their efforts."
According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, more than 400,000 children became regular smokers in 2007, and studies have shown that children are among the most susceptible to nicotine addiction.
Kick Butts Day is an annual youth-led anti-tobacco initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Josephs has been a proponent of tobacco control among the youth and across the state. She has introduced numerous pieces of legislation designed to reduce smoking and tobacco use and for clean air.
