Josephs: LIHEAP deadline extended, crisis grants increased

HARRISBURG, March 13 -- State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., is alerting residents that the application deadline for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has been extended to March 30. In addition, the maximum energy crisis grant available to low-income families has been increased to $400.

This means that Pennsylvania LIHEAP beneficiaries who have already received $300 in crisis grants this winter season can now apply for an additional $100 if they have another home heating emergency.

"Spring is just around the corner, but the weather isn't necessarily reflecting that and home heating bills are still costly. LIHEAP can help make those bills more affordable," Josephs said.

LIHEAP is a federally funded, state-administered program that helps low-income families pay their heating bills and finance emergency heating repairs with cash grants and crisis grants, respectively.

The income limit for LIHEAP eligibility is $14,700 for a person living alone and $24,900 for a family of three. For larger families, add $5,100 to that amount for each additional person in the household.

"If you or someone you know falls within the income guidelines, please contact my office so we can make sure you apply in time," Josephs said. Josephs' office phone number is 215-893-1515.

To date, LIHEAP has helped more than 80,000 families in crisis and provided cash grants to more than 304,000 families to stay warm this year.

Residents also can contact the toll-free LIHEAP hotline at 1-866-857-7095.
