Josephs offers help with application in office
PHILADELPHIA, June 28 – State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., wants local senior citizens to know that the deadline to apply for a Pennsylvania property tax/rent rebate has been extended until Dec. 31.
"There have been a few changes to the program in the last year and I was proud to support them so more senior citizens can benefit from this program," Josephs said.
To qualify, a resident must be a senior citizen 65 or older, a widow or a widower 50 or older and 18 or older with a permanent disability. Household income for homeowners may not exceed $35,000. However, since applicants may exclude half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, or federal Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits, those with household incomes of as much as $40,000 may still qualify. Renters also only need to count half of those categories of income, but their eligibility limit remains at $15,000.
For those who are not sure if they qualify or if anyone has questions about the program, they should call Josephs' office at 215-893-1515.
The state will begin mailing out rebate checks for this year's successful applicants after July 1. Rebate claims received after June 30 will be distributed as they are received and approved. Recipients also can have their rebates deposited directly into their checking or savings account.
To check on the status of a claim, residents should call the Department of Revenue's FACT and Information Line at 1-888-PATAXES (1-888-728-2937) after July 1. Touch-tone telephone service is required. Callers will need their Social Security number and the amount of their rebate. People without touch-tone telephone service should call 1-888-222-9190 between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. for help.
